Market Highlights: NuPathe Plummets After FDA Rejects Migraine Patch
The FDA rejected NuPathe’s (PATH) Zelrix, an ionto-phoretic patch for delivery of the popular migraine treatment sumatriptan. The news triggered a frenzied sell off causing the stock to lose almost half its value. The stock had already been trading down as investors became wary of the pending FDA action. Despite acknowledging efficacy of the patch, the FDA was concerned about “chemistry, manufacturing and safety questions.” NuPathe did its best to put a positive spin on the news saying that it has data to address some of the agency's questions and will have other relevant data shortly. But additional clinical studies may be required and clearly it will not launch in the first half of 2012, as had been expected. Cyberonics (CYBX) was one of the few gainers this month after announcing better than expected revenues...
New Approaches to Targeting Addiction
Addiction is often equated with drug dependency although the two are not the same. Dependency focuses on chemicals and has classically been divided into psychological dependency, i.e. a strong desire or need to experience the mental state induced by a substance and physical dependency, or a condition where a substance is needed to avoid harmful physiological effects up to and including death. Addiction is a wider concept that includes not just drugs but also behaviors that the subject feels an irresistible urge to repeatedly engage in, even though these behaviors are harmful or come with severe negative consequences to their health, social or financial well-being. ADial: Dialing Down Alcohol Abuse
ADial was started in 2007 by Dr. Bankole Johnson, with technology licensed from the University of Virginia. Neurotech Insights spoke with CEO William B. Stilley, who bought the assets of the original company in December 2010 and created a new entity. He hired new management and raised a $4.4 million round from angel investors and founders. He says, "The new entity is better structured for fundraising and acquisition. It is also better structured to develop products. The older company had history, the new one has no history. We have a new team with lots of experience, including a former chief marketing officer from Merck and a former head of R&D from Merck...."
