Market Highlights: AAIC Brings New Alzheimer's Data to Light
The annual Alzheimer’s Association International Conference (AAIC, previously ICAD) took place this month in Paris with over 5,000 scientists gathering to share their latest results. A few key clinical trial announcements were made which are detailed in the feature article of this issue. Overall results were disappointing with some theorizing that Alzheimer’s will become the new stroke – a reference to the fact that most investors and companies refuse to even look at stroke programs after a string of late stage failures. To date however, Alzheimer’s remains popular, and industry presence was significant with high level business development representatives attending from Eli Lilly, Genentech, Novartis, and Johnson & Johnson, to name a few...
Effective Alzheimer's Therapies Elusive Although many people equate Alzheimer's with dementia, only about 55-60% of dementia cases in the US are due to Alzheimer's disease (AD). Thirty-five percent are due to multi-infarct dementia, and the remainder are spread over more than 70 different disease entities. AD, like many neurological diseases is a pathological diagnosis, which means it can only be made post-mortem by examining the brain. A number of companies are developing imaging and in vitro diagnostic techniques which may soon provide objective tools to aid in diagnosis. This article outlines treatments in development for Alzheimer's...
Genetic Discoveries in Alzheimer's May Guide Future Therapeutic Strategies
The discovery and characterization of gene variants associated with increased Alzheimer’s risk have provided insights into biological mechanisms underpinning the disease. AD is subdivided into two broad categories, early and late onset AD. Early onset AD (EOAD) strikes at ages 30-65, and represents 1-5% of AD cases. The majority of EOAD cases are inherited disorders; pedigree analysis of afflicted families revealed that EOAD is inherited in an autosomal dominant fashion. Genetic linkage and positional cloning analyses of these families in the 1980’s-90’s revealed causative mutations in three genes...
Proteostasis: A Signature Approach to Drug Discovery
Rather than hedging their bets on a specific target in any particular disease, Proteostasis Therapeutics focuses on restoring biological pathways to a healthy condition. Zeroing in on the correct target can often be elusive, as evidenced in our Alzheimer’s feature article this month, and Proteostasis’ provides a unique platform to circumvent this problem. Neurotech Insights spoke with the President and CSO of Proteostasis Peter Reinhart...
