Market Highlights: Neurotech 2008 Spurs Dialogue and Deal-Making
The Neurotech Industry Investing and Partnering Conference 2008 in Boston drew 250 investors and executives for two intense days of sessions and networking. It was the most sucessful year to date with over 40 innovative companies revealing their latest clinical results, partnering and financing plans and discussing important lessons learned in the devleopment of tnnew brain and nervous systems treatments and diagnostics. Representative Patrick Kennedy announced the introduction of a bill ti improve the efficiency of developing new treatments (see story, Page 3). Evotec (EVTC) completed the acquisition of Renovis (RNVS) and began trading on the NASDAQ (see story, page 8). Memory Pharmaceuticals (MEMY) rebounded partially after Roche stepped in once again to give the company a cash infusion and a vote of confidence (see story, page 9)...

Options Limited at the Intersection of Neurology and Oncology
The National Cancer Institute estimates there will be almost 22,000 new cases of adult brain tumors in the US in 2008, and about 13,000 people will die of the disease. Almost 90% of central nervous system (CNS) tumors originate in the brain. Caucasians are more commonly affected than blacks and mortality is higher in men than in women. The only well-established environmental link is with exposure to vinyl chloride. There is some outstanding controversy regarding the use of cell phones and other devices that emit electromagnetic radiation, but most experts agree that these devices do not cause brain cancer. Still, the industry has issued precautionary guidelines. The issue has resurfaced since the brain cancer diagnosis in Senator Edward Kennedy and a recent Larry King Live show was devoted to it...

NeuroHealing Pharmaceuticals Inc. is a small private company located in Newton, MA. The company has three products in the clinic. It has been funded by its founders and the Bay Area angel group Life Science Angels (LSA). NeuroHealing is currently looking to raise approximately $20 million to fund mid to late stage clinical trials in coma recovery, post-stroke recovery, and sialorrhea (excessive salivation)...
