Market Highlights: Obesity Treatments Approach Finish Line, Investors Cool Off
Arena announced Phase III data for their weight loss candidate lorcaserin. While the study met the three primary endpoints and demonstrated safety, it failed to meet one of the FDA guidelines for approval, namely, producing at least 5% placebo adjusted weight loss. Orexigen’s Contrave also failed to meet this criteria, but gave a marginally better result: 4.2% weight loss compared to lorcaserin’s 3.6%. The market sent both stocks down on lowered expectations of partnering and patient adoption. In June, Vivus (VVUS) is expected to announce results from Phase III studies of its obesity drug. New Epilepsy Treatments March to Market The incidence of seizure disorders in the West ranges from 30 to 120 cases per 100,000 persons per year. There are an estimated 2.5 million cases in the US. Incidence and prevalence are thought to be higher in developing countries. U.S. revenues for anti-epileptics in 2008 were $11.3 billion, up 10% from 2007 according to IMS Health. Marinus Pharmaceuticals, Inc. was founded in 2004 as a drug discovery platform company. Soon afterwards, the company in-licensed two compounds morphing into a specialty pharmaceutical company. Marinus is now focusing on the development of ganaxolone, the compound it acquired from Purdue Pharma in 2006.
