Market Highlights: How to Answer the Big Questions about the Brain
Big questions in neuroscience were tackled this month from Seattle to DC. The Allen Institute for Brain Science hosted the first of what they plan to be an annual Symposium “Open Questions in Neuroscience.”  Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen has so far invested $126 million into the Institute, launched in 2003, which has created publicly available brain genome atlases. Allen also makes investments through Vulcan Capital, which gave Omeros, focused on inflammation and CNS disorders, a $20 million boost this month (see story, page 15)...

The incidence of hearing loss and other hearing disorders like tinnitus is increasing rapidly and currently affects over 30% of the general population in the US. MicroTransponder: Small Device, Big Possibilities

Microtransponder is a small private company focused on wireless neurostimulation devices hailing from Dallas, Texas. It is headed up by Will Rosellini, a Texas native and former pro baseball player with the Arizona Diamondbacks. Rosellini earned a law degree and seven master's degrees since he retired in 2001. He is currently pursuing a PhD in neuroscience in the lab of company founder Larry Cauller, who developed the neurostimulation technology as an associate professor at University of Texas, Dallas.  NeuroInsights spoke with Rosellini and asked how the company got started...
