Market Highlights: Investor Dollars Shift from Private to Public in 2010

NeuroInsights data indicates that venture capital investment in neurotech plummeted in 2010. Private drug, device, and diagnostic companies with a neuroscience related product in development raised an estimated $840 million, only a little more than half of the $1.6 billion raised in 2009. Public investors, on the other hand, flocked to neurotech in 2010.  The NASDAQ NeuroInsights Neurotech Index was up 32% for the year compared to only 15% for the NASDAQ Biotech and 13% for the S&P 500....


The Hunt for Huntington's Therapies
Huntington's disease, also known as Huntington's chorea or simply chorea is an autosomal dominant, single gene disorder that leads to progressive neurodegeneration and death. The word chorea derives from Greek and means dance. It is used to describe the involuntary dance-like movements that are a characteristic symptom of HD. The cause of HD, which affects both genders equally, is a mutation in a gene called huntingtin (HTT) that codes for a protein (Htt) of the same name. The exact function of the protein is unknown but it is expressed in most tissues. In patients with HD, many organ systems show evidence of the disorder, although specific neurological symptoms dominate the clinical picture. It is not well understood why neurons in the basal ganglia exhibit the greatest sensitivity to damage, thereby giving rise to the characteristic symptomatology. ..
