Market Highlights: Neurotech Venture Investment Higher in 2009, Devices Reign

Venture capital investment in neurotech companies (including drugs, devices and diagnostics) gained 12.3% to $1.62 billion last year according to data compiled by NeuroInsights. Overall venture investing was down 37% to $17.7 billion, marking the lowest level since 1997, and life science investing was down 23% to $6.15 billion according to NVCA. 2009 represented a significant rebound for neurotech after only $1.44 billion in investment in 2008 - a 22% drop over the previous year. The total number of neurotech deals was essentially flat with 111 deals compared to 110 in 2008. The average neurotech deal size in gained in 2009 to $14.61 million from $13.25 million in 2008. The average life science deal size in 2009 was only $8.2 million and the overall average deal size was $6.3 million, according to NVCA data. Causes and Treatments for Migraine and Related Headaches

Headaches can be a primary disorder as in migraine, cluster headache or tension headache, or a secondary symptom due to localized or systemic illness or injury. Nearly everyone has had a headache, and although headaches can be disabling, they are rarely life-threatening. Only a small minority of cases are due to serious illness. Common extracranial causes of headache include cervical spine disorders, dental problems, giant cell arteritis (temporal arteritis), glaucoma, optic neuritis, sinusitis and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder. The most common systemic causes are anemia, fever, viremia (common in flu syndrome), hypertension, hypoxia and drug withdrawal. Intracranial causes are often secondary to increased intracranial pressure as a result of a space-occupying lesion such as a tumor, a hematoma, an abscess or an arterio-venous malformation. Other intracranial causes include hemorrhage, meningitis, encephalitis, vasculitis, and increased intracranial pressure resulting from benign intracranial hypertension or obstructive hydrocephalus.
