Market Highlights: AAN Brings Flurry of Multiple Sclerosis Data and Trading

A number of companies revealed data on their oral multiple sclerosis treatments in development at the American Academy of Neurology annual meeting in Honolulu. Biogen Idec (BIIB) announced better than expected results from the first of two pivotal trials of their immune modulator BG-12. Information from the meeting and later in their quarterly report revealed that twice daily oral BG-12 reduced annualized relapse rate by 53% and disability progression by 38% compared to placebo at two years. A previous 6 month trial had put the reduction in relapse rate at 32%, similar to mainstay “ABCR” therapies....


Pursuing Relief and Revenues in Neuropathic Pain

Neuropathic pain is a large and very active market that has surpassed $5 billion in annual sales. So far, though, there has been no clear winner, in part because of an underlying heterogeneity in pathogenesis of the syndromes typically clustered under this heading.  Another factor is that most of the current treatment options provide relatively modest pain relief, hovering around 30-50%, and even those numbers are only reached in less than half the patients. As a result, a large market remains for new drugs, surgical approaches and increasingly for implantable devices such as pain pumps and neurostimulators.
