Brain Fitness and Neurosoftware 
Brain fitness was introduced in the late 80's, based on the idea that cognitive functions and memory could be maintained or even improved by exercising the brain just like physical fitness is maintained and improved by exercising the muscular and cardiovascular systems. With the introduction and success of personal computers, brain fitness software was born and the first programs were introduced in the early 90's. Programs for K-12 were created for children with learning difficulties and this later expanded into the ADHD and autism markets. Even later, programs for seniors were developed as well as programs for rehabilitation and psychotherapy. Even though brain fitness was and continues to be moving into the therapeutic realm, so far companies, with few exceptions, have tried hard to avoid making therapeutic claims that would make them subject to regulatory oversight...

 

Blue Marble Game Company Aims to Turn the Hard Work of Rehabilitation into Play
Blue Marble Game Company is a small startup spun out of USC in 2008. At the time, founder Sheryl Flynn PT, PhD, was working at the university with video-games for rehabilitation. "We made contact with some game companies, but nobody was interested in talking to us about games for rehab. Nobody had games for rehab and nobody wanted to change their existing games for rehab, so we decided to do it ourselves," she states.  The company is planning to launch their first game The Treasure of Bell Island in June...

 

Market Highlights: Industry Execs to Rally DC for Neurodegenerative Disease 
The Neurotechnology Industry Organization's fifth Public Policy Tour of Washington, DC will take place on March 20, 2012. The one-day event will focus on high-level meetings with congressional leaders on Capitol Hill to advocate for the introduction of a Neurodegenerative Disease Act and well as CDRH reform and other matters of interest to members. The focus of the tour will be on laying the foundation for a Neurodegenerative Disease Act: Extending Market Exclusivity for Disease Modifying Therapies Targeting the Nervous System for 10 Years. “The act is based on the Orphan Drug Act which makes it more commercially viable to develop treatments that would otherwise not be developed. The development of novel therapies that cure, slow the progression of, or prevent the onset of neurodegenerative disease, instead of simply mitigating its symptoms, is an extremely long and costly process. We believe that a longer exclusivity period will reinvigorate investment into some important new treatments that will make a real difference for patients,” said John Reppas, Director of Public Policy at NIO....
