Market Highlights: Is Forest Underpaying for Clinical Data?
Consolidation in the pharma sector continued with Sanofi-Aventis’ acquisition of Genzyme and Forest Laboratories (FRX) bid for Clinical Data (CLDA) (stories, pages 7 and 8). Forest plans to pay at least $1.2 billion, or $30 per share plus $6 per share in contingent value rights for Clinical Data, which recently got approval for their new antidepressant Viibryd. Viibryd is said to have a better sexual dysfunction side effect profile than current antidepressants, but the true profile and prescribing pattern against generic competition will only be apparent post-launch...


Retinal Disorders: A View on Treatments
A variety of treatments exist and are under development for wet AMD (see clinical trial table, page 13). Wet AMD is a large multi-billion market that is largely dominated by Genentech's monoclonal antibody, called Lucentis. The main drawback of Lucentis is its high price and the need for repeated applications. Lucentis pushed aside Macugen (pegaptanib), the first effective intra-ocular treatment developed by Eyetech and approved in 2004. Lucentis and Macugen inhibit vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a growth factor that stimulates blood vessel growth.
