Market Highlights: Companies Dip Toes in IPO Waters, New Drugs Get Shaken Out

Three IPO filings were announced this month by companies with neuropharmaceuticals in development.  BioLineRx, already listed on the TASE, filed for a $40 million IPO on NASDAQ. RNAi company Quark Pharmaceuticals is taking a shot at a $20 million IPO on the TASE after pulling a much larger offering on NASDAQ in 2007 (see stories, page 14). Who Will Step up to the Spinal Cord Injury Challenge?
Spinal cord injuries (SCI) often lead to devastating paralysis, muscle wasting and spasticity, loss of sensory awareness in the lower part of the body, and autonomous nervous system dysfunction. No restorative therapies exist as yet, although this is an area of intense activity and research.
Therapeutic interventions with curative intent fall largely into two categories: cellular therapies that attempt to bridge cysts or cavities, replace dead cells, and create a favorable environment for axon regeneration; and molecular therapies that focus on neural protection, reversal of inhibitory scar products, promotion of axonal growth and enhancing nerve conduction.  Additionally neurostimulation devices can be used to promote plasticity and supplement functioning in SCI patients..
