Market Highlights: Neurotech Index Adds Three, Loses Seven; Pivotal Alzheimer's Results Announced
The NASDAQ NeuroInsights Neurotech Index underwent its biannual assessment resulting in the addition of three companies Adolor (ADLR), Noven (NOVN) and Somanetics (SMTS) and the loss of seven whose market cap dropped below the $200 million minimum, namely Alexza (ALXA), Aspect Medical (ASPM), Javelin (JAV), Micrus (MEND), Neurocrine (NBIX), Northstar Neuroscience (NSTR), and Vanda Pharmaceuticals (VNDA) (see Index, page 16).

June was a pivotal month in Alzheimer’s news. Myriad announced that development of Flurizan would be discontinued after it failed a Phase III. Last months agreement with Lundbeck, only one month ahead of Phase III results, raised a red flag (see story, page 8). Elan (ELN) reached a new high after announcing topline results from the bapineuzumab Phase II. The results were mixed however, and investors seemed overeager to interpret the announcement positively. Results were significant only in ApoE4 noncarriers based on a post-hoc analysis. The company does not plan to release real numbers until the Alzheimer’s conference in late July.  While the adverse event description was murky at best, it was disclosed that treated groups showed vasogenic edema (untreatable brain swelling) in a dose dependent manner and this effect was worse in E4 carriers (see story, page 5)

There are no persistent neurological abnormalities and the patient remains conscious throughout the attack. The cause of TIA's has been debated but most experts believe that emboli from ulcerated atherosclerotic plaques in the major arteries supplying the brain are to blame...

Neurobiological Technologies (NTII): Betting on Snake Venom

Neurobiological Technologies, Inc. (NTII) was formed in 1988 when Enoch Callaway, a prominent UCSF researcher and John Stuppin, then an investment banker, decided to form a company to take advantage of breakthroughs in neuropsychiatry that were not adequately funded by government grants. The company was one of the first to try a virtual model of drug development, with no in house research, which it continues to utilize nearly 20 years later.  Products are brought in from academia or other companies and developed internally...
